The ABCs of Vitamin C: Why This Antioxidant Should Be a Non-Negotiable in Your Skincare Routine If there’s one skincare ingredient that belongs in everyone’s regimen , it’s Vitamin C. Whether you're just beginning your skincare journey or refining a clinical-grade routine, Vitamin C is the multitasking MVP that helps protect, brighten, and firm—no matter your age or skin type. At The Face Lab in Toronto , we believe in intentional skincare powered by evidence , and few ingredients have as much clinical backing as Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) . What Does Vitamin C Actually Do for the Skin? Think of Vitamin C like your skin’s daily bodyguard —it doesn’t just boost your glow, it fights off environmental threats that accelerate aging. Here’s what makes it a powerhouse: Brightens dull, uneven skin tone Neutralizes free radicals caused by UV rays and pollution Boosts collagen production to improve firmness and elasticity Reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sun damage Helps prevent premature aging when used consistently Why Not All Vitamin C Is Created Equal The truth? Not every Vitamin C serum is effective. Like a freshly sliced orange, Vitamin C is highly unstable and oxidizes quickly when exposed to light, air, or heat. That’s why we only recommend clinically stabilized formulations that are proven to penetrate and perform. How to Choose the Right Vitamin C Serum Look for these ABCs when selecting your Vitamin C: A ctive Form: Opt for L-ascorbic acid , the most researched and potent form of Vitamin C B lendability: It should pair well with other active ingredients like niacinamide , Vitamin E , or ferulic acid C linical Formulation: Stick to medical-grade brands with research-backed ingredients, tested pH levels, and proper packaging When and How to Use Vitamin C Use your Vitamin C serum every morning after cleansing , before moisturizer and SPF. It works best during the day, when your skin needs extra protection from oxidative stress. 💡 Pro tip from The Face Lab: Layering Vitamin C under sunscreen can amplify your UV defense , giving you better long-term protection against photoaging. Our Favourite Vitamin C Serums at The Face Lab™ We’ve curated only the most effective Vitamin C serums that meet our clinical standards. These are the ones we trust on our own skin and recommend to patients daily: 1. AlumierMD® EverActive C&E™ + Peptide A stabilized, dual-chamber system that maintains potency with every use. Great for brightening, firming , and reducing fine lines. Shop AlumierMD® EverActive C&E™ via our patient portal 2. Alastin Skincare® C-RADICAL Defense Antioxidant Serum Powered by a liposomal delivery system and 15 potent antioxidants, this Vitamin C serum offers advanced protection while boosting your skin’s natural resilience. Shop Alastin C-RADICAL Defense Serum here Our Approach: Skin Science, Elevated At The Face Lab™ , we believe Vitamin C is foundational in your prevention-first approach, whether you’re layering it under sunscreen or pairing it with collagen-stimulating treatments like Sculptra® , Sofwave™ , or Aerolase® . Want to know which Vitamin C serum is best for your skin goals? Book a consultation or reach out through your patient portal for customized product recommendations. If you’re looking for skin rejuvenation that’s subtle, regenerative, and long-lasting—without the instantly “filled” look— Sculptra might be the biostimulant you’ve been searching for. At The Face Lab, we specialize in treatments that work with your body’s natural healing systems, not against them. And Sculptra is a prime example of that. So how exactly does Sculptra work? Let’s break it down. What Is Sculptra, and What Does It Do? Sculptra is an injectable biostimulant made from PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) —a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic compound that’s been used safely in medicine for decades. When injected beneath the skin, PLLA particles stimulate your body to produce collagen , the protein responsible for skin structure, elasticity, and firmness. This process is called neocollagenesis —aka the rebuilding of your skin from the inside out. How Does Sculptra Work Over Time? Unlike traditional dermal fillers that offer instant volume by physically filling space, Sculptra works gradually by jumpstarting your skin’s natural collagen production. Here’s what you can expect: Week 1–4: You may notice a subtle, temporary “plumping” from the injection fluid—this fades within a few days. Month 1–3: Your skin begins building collagen beneath the surface. Month 3–6: Full results develop slowly, revealing firmer, fuller, smoother skin —without looking overdone or obvious. Results are long-lasting—typically 2 to 3 years —and can be maintained with regular touch-ups. Where Is Sculptra Used? Sculptra is most commonly used to treat facial volume loss , especially due to aging or weight loss. It’s ideal for areas like: Temples Cheeks Pre-auricular area Marionette lines Smile lines And even off-label for areas like the buttocks, chest, and arms for skin tightening and contour Is Sculptra Worth It? This is one of the most searched questions—and for good reason. If you're looking for a treatment that delivers long-term, natural-looking results , Sculptra is absolutely worth considering. Here’s why patients at The Face Lab love it: It supports your body’s own collagen synthesis There’s no “pillow face” or overfilled look It’s discreet—your skin just starts looking better, and no one knows why Results can last 2–3x longer than traditional fillers Sculptra vs. Fillers: What’s the Difference? One of the top Google searches we see is: “Is Sculptra better than filler?” The answer depends on your goals.

At The Face Lab, we’re all about treatments that work with your body, not just on it. If you’re exploring more regenerative options for facial rejuvenation beyond traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, you’ve likely come across Sculptra and Radiesse. While both are biostimulant injectables—designed to stimulate your own natural collagen—they work differently and are tailored for different goals. Let’s break down the differences between Sculptra and H yperdilute Radiesse , so you can feel confident about choosing the treatment that aligns best with your skin goals. What Are Biostimulants, and Why Choose Them? Biostimulants are not your typical fillers. Unlike HA fillers, which simply add temporary volume, biostimulants trigger your body to produce collagen , offering results that evolve naturally over time. If you're looking for subtle rejuvenation, longer-lasting outcomes, and treatments that support your skin's internal architecture, biostimulants like Sculptra and hyperdilute Radiesse might be your perfect match. The Breakdown: Sculptra vs. Hyperdilute Radiesse 1. Composition + Mechanism of Action Sculptra (Poly-L-lactic Acid) Composed of PLLA, a synthetic, biodegradable substance. Works by stimulating collagen deep within the dermis. No instant volume—results develop gradually over weeks to months. Ideal for global volume restoration and natural rejuvenation. Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite) Made from CaHA microspheres suspended in a gel. Offers immediate volume while also kickstarting collagen production. When hyperdiluted, Radiesse becomes more spreadable, perfect for skin tightening, texture improvement, and mild volume support. Think of it as both a volumizer and a collagen-booster depending on how it’s used. Treatment Areas Sculptra is great for: Cheeks and temples (think: lifting and restoring contour) Jawline refinement Facial hollowness from aging, weight loss, or illness Chest and body areas when used off-label (we’ll guide you through what’s safe and effective) Hyperdilute Radiesse shines in: Lower face: smile lines, marionette lines, jawline Neck and décolletage: for tightening and texture Hands: for volume and skin quality Arms, thighs, and buttocks (off-label) to improve crepiness and firmness Results Timeline + Longevity Sculptra Collagen-building takes time—expect to see results gradually over 3–6 months. Long-lasting: up to 2+ years with proper treatment. Perfect if you’re after a slow, steady, and natural-looking transformation. Radiesse (Hyperdiluted) Delivers instant volume when used undiluted. When hyperdiluted, it improves skin texture and firmness over time—results can last 12–18 months. Best for those who want a visible “glow-up” sooner, while still benefiting from longer-term collagen production. What Does the Treatment Process Look Like? Sculptra Typically done in a series of 2–3 sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart. Minimal downtime—expect mild swelling or bruising post-injection. Full results develop over time as collagen builds. Hyperdilute Radiesse Often requires 1–2 sessions depending on the area and desired result. You’ll see some instant improvement, especially with undiluted Radiesse, followed by ongoing skin enhancement. Low downtime, with results that build and refine over weeks. Who’s a Good Candidate? At The Face Lab, we personalize every treatment plan based on your anatomy, skin health, and goals—but here are some general guidelines: Sculptra may be right for you if you: Have experienced significant facial volume loss Are looking for subtle, long-term improvement Prefer results that appear naturally over time Hyperdilute Radiesse might be ideal if you: Want immediate skin rejuvenation with a side of collagen-building, especially in the neck and hands Are targeting skin laxity or texture issues Are looking for a more lifted, smoother look without the “overfilled” appearance Final Thoughts: Which One Should You Choose? Both Sculptra and Hyperdilute Radiesse offer incredible skin-regenerating benefits—but the best option depends on your goals, timeline, and what kind of transformation you’re envisioning. Still not sure which biostimulant is best for you? Book a comprehensive consultation where we assess your skin, discuss your goals, and curate a plan that feels right for you .
