Traction Alopecia & PRP Hair Restoration: Nurse Joanna Auguste for ELLE Canada

Nurse Joanna's Take: Understanding Traction Alopecia and Natural Hair Restoration Options

ELLE Canada's feature on female hair loss included insight from Toronto nurse practitioner and The Face Lab founder Joanna Auguste, alongside dermatologist Dr. Katie Beleznay and trichologist Caroline Ruggiero.

Nurse Joanna spoke to traction alopecia, a form of hair loss she sees often in her practice — caused by repeated pulling of the hair. She explained that high buns, tight ponytails, hair extensions, braids, and dreadlocks can all place ongoing tension on the follicle over time, leading to damage and hair loss.

She also discussed PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, a treatment she offers at The Face Lab for hair restoration. The approach draws a patient's own blood, processes it to concentrate platelets, then reintroduces it to areas in need — supporting the body's own healing and regeneration. For patients drawn to non-pharmaceutical options, she noted it can be an appealing alternative to daily medication.
